We would say "Seek the true cause".

Aside from that, one's motivation always tries to ground itself in bodhichitta, in other words, what is best for others. This is always a good way to determine if our actions are selfish or selfless.

Kelly, how do you avoid helping or giving so much that it depletes you?
example: someone in the meditation class needed a blanket so you give then yours
for good karma, but now your ass is on the floor with no blanket and you can't meditate.
this is obviously a very trivial example but sometimes people that you want to help are like
vampires and you find yourself giving so much that it literally becomes unhealthy.
